Yes, I am a salty girl.

Now, you gonna ask what that means: Salty girl. I am salty, literally. When we started sailing, I tasted the wind. I liked that taste, it was salty. Sometimes, I get sprayed by the waves a little, when I hang my head out of the cockpit. I like that too.

Since arriving in the Sea of Cortez, it go hot. Today it was 96F/ 36C! Now that’s hot especially for a Welchie. We like Welsh weather, cool, rainy around 60F/ 16C. That’s what it’s like in Wales all year around. Today was easily double as hot. Mom groomed me a couple days ago, so that I have my nice coarse hair and no old, warm hairs, so that the breeze can go nicely in between. And today she took a bucket with ocean water and drowsed me with it. First, I didn’t know what to think and just stood there baffled. I mean, I am a city girl and hair just doesn’t look good, when washed with salt water. But then I got it. The wetter my fur is the better. It cools me off. It’s not about being pretty, it’s about being cool. So, whenever I am getting hot, my humans notice and I get another bucket. I am starting to like it.

It was my dad’s birthday today, so we took the dinghy ashore and dad rowed. The outboard, that piece of fickle crap of an engine, doesn’t work again and dad wants to get in shape anyway, so he rowed even if it was his birthday. I like it better when the outboard works, because then my humans sit on the sides of the dinghy and I have the whole dinghy floor to myself. When dad is rowing, mom and I sit on the floor, dad in the middle. We are all squeezed in there like sardines in a can.
So, we got to the restaurant at the end of the beach, very nice there, they have cool tile floors and a very high roof made out of palm fronds. And they like dogs. Everyone in Mexico seems to like dogs. People are really nice to me and I can come with anywhere. Today my humans ate for an extra long time and I took an extra long nap.
Then we walked back on the beach to where we had parked the dinghy. Mom held me over the water. I wasn’t sure what she wanted, because I don’t like my feet wet. So, I started paddling like I would when I swim. But hold on, I don’t know how to … I couldn’t even finish my thought and I was in the water and I was swimming a little. Then I was standing. Standing in water, in salt water. It was only half bad. It was actually ok and I am sure I will be doing more of that this summer.

Now you know how I became a salty girl.
